Boone Day

The Kentucky Historical Society recognizes June 7 as Boone Day to commemorate the first time American pioneer, explorer and frontiersman Daniel Boone saw the forests and valleys of what is now Kentucky on June 7, 1769. Today, do some research to learn more about this fascinating character, or watch the 1936 film “Daniel Boone,” which helped solidify Boone as a folk hero.

King Kamehameha Day

Date: June 11

On June 11 every year, the small Hawaiian community of North Kohala puts on a big celebration in honor of the “Napoleon of the Pacific,” Kamehameha I, a monarch who first established the Kingdom of Hawaii, linking all the Hawaiian islands as a unified state. The day is considered a public holiday by the state of Hawaii, and usually involves a parade, a music festival and draping the king’s statue with flowers.

Father’s Day, commonly held on the third Sunday in June, is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Sonora Dodd was the driving force behind its establishment in 1910, when she honored her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, a single parent of six children. A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. The day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

Talk Like a Pirate Day

Get ready for some sea-faring, swashbuckling fun on this holiday. When actor Robert Newton created his voice for characters in the films “Treasure Island,” “Long John Silver” and “Blackbeard, the Pirate,” that iconic, salty sea-dog accent along with its signature “Arrr!” were forever etched in the imagination of people everywhere. In 1995, a pair of men in Oregon started “Talk like a Pirate Day” as an inside joke, but it has taken off and is now celebrated internationally.
