Western Party

One good thing about planning a Western-themed party is how easy it is to find the perfect decorations and personalized candy. Another good thing is how fun the party itself will be! A Western party is a fun, laid-back type of event that lends itself well to any kind of celebration. All you need is a field or a barn, a bunch of hay bales and some inexpensive decorations to get started.

Some party ideas might be:
  1. Mason Jar Candle Lamps
  2. Chili Cook-Off
  3. Cowboy Hat and Horseshoe Cookies
  4. Saloon Entrance
  5. Wanted Poster Cards and Mustaches
  6. Western Themed Candy Wrappers
  7. Hay Bales
  8. Open Pit Fire or Bonfire for Roasting and Stories

Hay bales are available from many local farm supply stores or farmer’s markets, or hit up a farmer friend to help you out. These make great outdoor seating – just cover with a blanket or quilt for comfort. Place a few around a bonfire for when the sun goes down.

Lawn torches are great for lighting the way to the food table or the restroom after dark. (Speaking of restrooms, depending on your party location, you may need to rent a few Port-a-Potties.) Cover tables with checkered tablecloths, and place some tiny, white Christmas lights inside mason jars, surrounded by a bit of ivy or other greenery for beautiful centerpieces. Small metal pails are a perfect way to display your Western themed candy wrapped mints. Rusty watering cans filled with flowers are lovely, too.

A Western party is a great opportunity for a potluck, where everyone brings a dish. Perfect dishes include barbecue, fried chicken, baked beans, corn on the cob, potato salad and cornbread. And don’t forget the beer (or root beer)! Ball or Mason jars are great for beverages. For entertainment, simply pick up a CD of country’s greatest hits, or even hire a band and a caller for square dancing.

When you send invitations, make sure to tell your guests that they are encouraged to dress in costume. Western sheriff and saloon girl costumes are plentiful online, and it’s easy to put together a casual Western-style outfit with jeans, boots, cowboy hats and red handkerchiefs. A fun extra that is also easy to find online is a “wanted poster” photo backdrop. Your guests will have a great time posing for pictures.
