Home poker sets are easy to find in stores or online, but if you already have chips and cards, you can up the ante by using a swatch of green felt to cover a table, and you’re all set. Make sure you have a minimum of 35 chips per person, but it’s best to have 50 to 100 chips per person.
If you choose to play for real money, keep the buy-in low so no one is tempted to bet the farm. Determine your chip denominations for each color of chip. A typical casino standard is $1 for white, $5 for red, $10 for blue, $25 for green and $100 for black. (Note that chip denominations don’t necessarily have to relate to the cash involved, if you are playing for money.) But if your group includes some less experienced or even novice players, you may want to consider working with only two - or even just one - denomination.
Have “dealer buttons” available, one per table. Most poker sets include a dealer button, or just use something distinctive. These are used to keep track of the “dealer” - which is important even if you use a single dealer.
Snacks and finger foods are great to have on hand for before, during and after the game. Raise the stakes of your friendly poker game and throw in PartySweets mints in a Card Game or Money theme to make the action more exciting along with your Casino-themed napkins and plates.
Guests can simply come as they are, or you can tell them ahead of time to dress up – cocktail dresses and tuxes can lend an air of sophistication to your event. Dealers can wear green plastic visors and costume armbands.
The goal for any poker night is to have fun, spend time with friends and make sure everyone wants to come again.
